Like First Fridays, these monthly events are intended to showcase local artists and musicians; however, the Tazewell County effort also includes a partnership with local small businesses. Berchtold and Brown talk about the value of building partnerships between the business and arts sectors, and about some of the special events on tap for tonight. There's also a scavenger hunt that runs all summer.

Haddad’s Restaurant on West Main Street in Peoria will be making and serving customers hummus and kibbeh as usual -- even though its front window is missing. 

Western Illinois University wants to do more to help the Quad Cities area create new  businesses and expand existing companies. In January, the university opened its second Small Business Development Center on its riverfront campus in Moline. WIU also opened a new, International Trade Center.

Peoria Encourages Shop Local Effort

Peoria City, County and business owners are asking residents to shop local this Thanksgiving season.  The push to shop local comes as Peoria sales tax revenues struggle to grow, in-part because of online or nearby big-box stories.  Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce President Jeff Griffin says Peoria isn’t unique to the challenge:

Peoria County is also using federal grant money to help boost small, minority and women-owned businesses in the area.  The $270,000 grant was intended to help the County purchase and renovate a small-business incubator facility in the region.  County Board member Rachel Parker says the grant and a local match of $400,000 will instead be used to invest in existing programs:
