state tax returns

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois Department of Revenue says taxpayers will have to wait until after March 1 to receive income tax refunds.

The department says the delay is because of efforts to stop fraud. The department says it's not because of the state budget impasse.

State Revenue Director Connie Beard says in a statement the delay of a few weeks will let the department "better detect attempts at identity theft and ensure taxpayer refunds do not fall needlessly into hands of criminals."

PHA targeting state tax returns to recoup bad debts

May 21, 2013

The Peoria Housing Authority will soon have a way to collect unpaid bills left by former tenants. The authority recently completed an application for the Local Debt Recovery Program offered by the state. It will allow the PHA to recover the debts of former tenants through state tax returns. Brenda Coates is the Chief Executive Officer of the authority.

"Any funds that we can recoup with reductions in funding, but also if tenants owe us money, there will be a data base. Any money that we can recoup is going to be helpful for us.”
