Washington launches shop local campaign amid recovery

Washington is focused on financial as well as physical recovery from last month's tornado.  The city's Chamber of Commerce launched a new campaign called 'Visit, Shop, Eat Washington'.  Mayor Gary Manier says the goal is to get residents from other communities to shop in the town:

New Images Put Tornado Damage Into Broad Perspective

New images gathered by the City of Pekin using satellite imagery shows the full scale of destruction as viewed from space. The city's GIS data from before and after the storm, was referenced and compiled using ESRI software to reveal the path of destruction that Sunday's EF-4 in Washington took. The EF-2 tornado damage in Pekin, and East Peoria is also displayed in the website.  The large footprint of the damage is immediately evident, as is the debris field just outside of the areas in the nearby farm fields.

By selecting "bookmarks" on the upper right-hand side of the web page, users can also view additional overlays of satellite images.

Volunteers help Washington residents devastated by storms

Police Extend Curfew Following Tornado

UPDATED

In the aftermath of Sunday's tornadoes, the City of Pekin will once again enforce a  9pm to 6am curfew for areas on Sheridan from 2nd  to 8th street, including areas north between those streets to Lakeside. Pekin Police will continue to heavily patrol all damaged areas. Residents are encouraged to call the following numbers if they need assistance, or are wanting to volunteer. This is a hotline that went live Thursday set up by the Emergency Operations Center.

Tornadoes Level Homes Across Tri-County Area

Heavy storms and at least one tornado ripped through Central Illinois Sunday morning. Peoria Public Radio's Alex Rusciano reports the storms devastated parts of Washington.

 

 Hundreds of people picked through the rubble of what remained of their homes in the town of about 15-thousand.  The tornado destroyed entire blocks of homes.  Resident Susan Newton lives next door to the Trails Edge neighborhood that was heavily damaged.  She says the tornado demolished most of her street while she was at church
