Council Discusses Consolidation of Peoria Township

Sep 13, 2017

A new state law sets guidelines for the dissolution or consolidation of townships. Peoria Township is entirely within the boundaries of the city of Peoria, and the city council sits as the township board of trustees.

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner wants to reduce the number of local governments in the state.    One of Rauner’s first acts as governor was to form a new committee.  Its mission: to consolidate the number of governments since Illinois has more than any other state.  Those governments include townships, school districts, and fire districts.

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner's task force on shrinking the number of Illinois government offices and eliminating some unfunded mandates has unanimously approved its recommendations.

A statewide commission looking to reduce the number of unnecessary governing bodies in Illinois passed several measures in Peoria today. The Local Government Consolidation and Unfunded Mandates Task Force task force overwhelmingly supported measures that include putting consolidation decisions before voters in 2016.

Gov. Bruce Rauner set up the task force in February to recommend ways to trim the number of local governing bodies in the state.
