The threat of a 40% cut in Amtrak funding drew objections from 16 university and municipal officials this morning.

Two Illinois municipalities are challenging new train safety rules they say would allow the continued use of oil and ethanol tank cars known to fail during accidents.

Cuts the governor is proposing for next year's budget are a concern for transportation officials. 

Amtrak says it has not had a single complaint or problem with a pilot project in Illinois allowing customers to travel with small pets. So, it's making the program permanent around the state.

Clean-up of an oil train derailment continues in Illinois' far northwestern corner.  A BNSF train passing through Galena derailed on Thursday.

Gov. Bruce Rauner's proposed state budget would cut $16 million from Illinois' funding for Amtrak trains that serve downstate areas.

The Canadian National railroad says Amtrak’s poor on-time performance for trains using their track is not entirely its fault.

A train derailment in northern Peoria County left more than 40 rail cars off the tracks but no injuries. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway train was heading west near the community of Laura, Illinois. The incident came as severe thunderstorms moved through the area. Andy Williams is a spokesman with BNSF. He says no roadways were blocked by the train, and crews are working to clear the two rail lines:

During winter weather, it’s common for flights to be cancelled and roads to be closed. Usually the trains still run without incident. But during the winter storm of the past few days, Amtrak passengers in the region found themselves stranded on trains for hours at time. Illinois Public Radio’s Jonathan Ahl reports:
