Sex-change operations added to U of I Urbana student insurance plans

University of Illinois trustees voted Thursday to add coverage for sex-change operations to the health insurance plan used by many students on the Urbana campus.  University officials say that coverage will cost undergraduates an extra 2 dollars each semester, starting this fall. That’s on top of an increase of $35 that the University says is related to the Affordable Care Act.  Student Stephanie Skora is president of the Campus Union for Trans Equality, and she urged trustees to support the gender confirmation surgery.

U of I trustees to consider 1.7-percent tuition hike

University of Illinois trustees later this month will consider raising tuition 1.7 percent for next school year. The university announced the proposed increase on Monday as a committee of trustees reviewed it. The full board of trustees would have to approve the proposal at its next meeting on Jan. 23. The proposal would raise the cost of a year of tuition for in-state students to $12,036 in Urbana-Champaign, $10,584 in Chicago and $9,405 in Springfield.

U of I Board dismisses longtime professor

The University of Illinois Board of Trustees dismissed an engineering professor who had a 50-year career at the state's flagship school Thursday. Administrators say it's the first time a tenure decision went to the board.
