As part of his budget address, Governor Bruce Rauner called for a 10% funding increase to MAP Grants yesterday.  

The state’s ongoing budget impasse has hit community colleges particularly hard, with funds to these schools and the students who attend them drastically reduced. The Illinois Community College Board is distributing $3 million in emergency aid, divided among seven campuses.

The University of Illinois plans to hold basic tuition steady for in-state students enrolling in the fall, but students at the Chicago campus will see an increase for certain majors. That bump is called a “differential,” and university spokesman Tom Hardy says Illinois has been using differentials on all three campuses to raise money for engineering, business administration, nursing and other subjects:

Eureka College freezes room, board costs for 2014-2015

Eureka College is freezing student room and board costs for the 2014-2015 academic year.  The Board of Trustees vote follows a similar move to freeze tuition at the current year’s rate. The freeze applies to present and incoming students. 

State funding for colleges and universities appears to be rebounding across the nation. Illinois State University Professor Jim Palmer says his annual survey shows state legislatures spent nearly 6% more on higher education last year. Palmer says these funding swings tend to track recessions and the economy fairly closely:

U of I trustees to consider 1.7-percent tuition hike

University of Illinois trustees later this month will consider raising tuition 1.7 percent for next school year. The university announced the proposed increase on Monday as a committee of trustees reviewed it. The full board of trustees would have to approve the proposal at its next meeting on Jan. 23. The proposal would raise the cost of a year of tuition for in-state students to $12,036 in Urbana-Champaign, $10,584 in Chicago and $9,405 in Springfield.

ICC tuition to increase eight percent

Illinois Central College tuition is going up eight percent next school year. The ICC board of trustees approved the  increase Wednesday. It raises the tuition rate about nine dollars per credit hour.
