Winnebago County

The sheriff in northern Illinois' Winnebago County says budget cuts mean he will lay off 64 reserve deputies on Oct. 20.

Rockford police seized $8.6 million in cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl in a raid last month in southeast Rockford, officials announced Thursday.

Officers found the drugs after raiding 629 16th Avenue on Nov. 22, where they arrested 58-year-old Luis Ruiz, according to the Rockford Register Star. He's been charged with delivery of a controlled substance and three counts of possession with intent to deliver.

A former Winnebago County purchasing director has been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing more than $440,000 from a program that received federal money.  Federal prosecutors say 57-year-old Sally A. Claassen of Roscoe was sentenced in Rockford.

Federal prosecutors have charged a former Winnebago County purchasing director with embezzling at least $5,000.  U.S. Attorney John MacKenzie filed a criminal complaint in federal court against Sally Claassen.

Residents of Winnebago County are contributing money to train a third police dog for the sheriff's department.
